Frequently Asked Questions

Fret saw or band saw: which to choose?

A fret saw uses a thin oscillating blade for tight curves, small radii, and internal cuts starting from a drilled hole. A band saw has a continuous blade for wide curves and thicker materials. For inlays, modeling, and fine details, a fret saw is needed. For curved cuts on thick panels, a band saw is better.

What does reach mean and how much of it is needed?

The throat (or swan neck) is the distance between the blade and the rear structure of the machine. It determines the maximum width of the workable piece: with a 460mm throat, you can work panels up to 920mm. For model making, 400mm is enough; for large decorative panels, 500mm or more is better.

What power is needed for an electric tunnel boring machine?

Variable speed (typically 550-1600 RPM) allows you to adapt the cut to the material. Use low speeds for plastics, plexiglass, and soft metals, which would otherwise melt or deform. Use high speeds for soft wood and plywood. Adjusting the speed also reduces blade breakage.

What is variable speed used for?

Variable speed (typically 550-1600 RPM) allows you to adapt the cut to the material. Use low speeds for plastics, plexiglass, and soft metals, which would otherwise melt or deform. Use high speeds for soft wood and plywood. Adjusting the speed also reduces blade breakage.

Is the tilt table really useful?

Yes, the 45° tilting table allows for bevel and angled cuts without having to tilt the workpiece. Useful for dovetail joints, frames and three-dimensional marquetry work. All Bernardo SS Vario models feature a tilting cast aluminum table with a graduated scale.

What blades to use for the electric scroll saw?

Blades are chosen based on material and type of cut. For soft wood: coarse-toothed blades (10-15 TPI). For plywood and fine details: fine-toothed blades (18-25 TPI). For plastic and soft metals: specific blades with even finer teeth. Spiral blades cut in all directions but leave a wider kerf.

The scroll saw is the machine for precision curved cuts on solid wood, plywood, and thin materials up to 50mm thick. The electric scroll saw uses a thin oscillating blade that allows for very tight radii and internal cuts starting from a hole: the ideal choice for inlays, ship modeling, wooden puzzles, lutherie, and artistic decorations.

Unlike the bandsaw which uses a continuous blade for wide curves and thicker pieces, the scroll saw excels in fine details and complex shaping where quick changes of direction are needed.

Krollit offers Bernardo and Güde scroll saws with prices from €148 to €490. The entry-level model Güde GDS 16 E is suitable for beginners in model making and hobby work. The Bernardo SS 460 N Vario and SS 530 N Vario offer a larger throat (460-530mm), variable speed from 550 to 1600 rpm, a 45° tilting table for angled cuts, and an integrated dust blower to keep the cutting line visible.

The throat (or gooseneck) determines the maximum size of the workpiece: with a 460mm throat, you can work on panels up to 920mm wide. The variable speed allows you to adapt the cut to the material: low speeds for plastics and soft metals, high speeds for soft wood.

For working on thicker pieces or less tight curves, consider wood bandsaws. You can find replacement blades in the scroll saw accessories and spare parts section. To keep your work area clean, combine with a chip extraction system.

Krollit has been an official Bernardo and Güde distributor in Italy since 2007. Shipping throughout Italy, dedicated technical assistance.
