CBN or diamond grinding wheel: which to choose?
CBN for sharpening drills and tools made of HSS, hardened and case-hardened steels. Diamond ONLY for carbide (widia, HM).
CBN grinding wheels cut "cold" without rounding on HSS, maintaining the abrasive edge for a long time. Diamond grinding wheels should not be used on steel: the grains quickly round off, losing cutting ability.
What materials can it work with?
Depends on the geometry and material of the tool: HSS for common steels, HM/widia for hard steels, CBN for HSS and case-hardened steels, diamond for carbide.
Cobalt HM inserts (HSSE) work up to HRC 65. CBN grinding wheels cut HRC 55-70 steels maintaining concentricity over time. For cast iron, consider green silicon carbide grinding wheels.
How is it stored and maintained?
In a dry environment, protected from impacts and oxidation. Grinding wheels should be dressed periodically with a diamond dresser.
For abrasive grinding wheels, proper storage and periodic dressing preserve the cutting geometry. For HM inserts, storage in the original box is sufficient.
