CBN for sharpening drills and tools made of HSS, hardened and case-hardened steels. Diamond ONLY for hard metal (carbide, HM).
CBN grinding wheels cut "cold" without dulling on HSS, maintaining their abrasive edge for a long time. Diamond grinding wheels should not be used on steel: the grains quickly dull, losing cutting ability.
What materials can it work on?
It depends on the tool's geometry and material: HSS for common steels, HM/carbide for hard steels, CBN for HSS and case-hardened steels, diamond for hard metal.
Cobalt HM inserts (HSSE) work up to HRC 65. CBN grinding wheels cut steels with HRC 55-70 while maintaining concentricity over time. For cast iron, consider green silicon carbide grinding wheels.
