CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) wheels are for high-speed HSS steel tools — they keep the cutting edge cool during sharpening without the risk of tempering. SDC (diamond) wheels are for tungsten carbide (HM/TCT) tools — the diamond abrasive is the only one that effectively works carbide without wearing out the wheel. Using the wrong wheel results in poor sharpening and premature wear of the wheel itself.
