Who uses the HMS 600 and for what
The Bernardo HMS 600 is a planer knife sharpener: it restores the edge of HSS and HM knives for surface and thickness planers instead of sending them for external sharpening. A set of 3 HSS 260 mm knives costs 40–80 euros; sharpening them with the HMS 600 takes 15–25 minutes. The ability to sharpen two 310 mm knives simultaneously halves the time when working on paired knives. The adjustable guide inclination from 20° to 90° allows for maintaining the original angle of any knife. In Krollit customers' workshops, it is used by carpentry shops that use Bernardo AD, ADM, FS planers with HSS knives.
Who is the Bernardo HMS 600 for
| Profile | Compatibility | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Passionate hobbyist | Suitable | 36 kg, 230V: suitable for hobbyists with combined planers who want to manage sharpening internally. ROI depends on the frequency of planer use. |
| Professional carpentry | Ideal | Knives up to 620 mm, HSS and HM, simultaneous sharpening of 2 310 mm knives: the solution for those with planers with knives and who want to eliminate machine downtime for external sharpening. |
| Industrial production | Suitable | For carpentry shops with intensive cycles on hardwoods considering switching to planers with TCT spiral shafts (even lower maintenance), the HMS 600 is the most economical transitional solution. |
Not suitable for: knives over 620 mm (consider higher HMS models); knives with deep chips (require more aggressive grinding); carpentry shops that already have planers with TCT shafts (almost no maintenance).

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the HMS 600 sharpen both HSS and HM (carbide) knives?
Yes. The HMS 600 is compatible with standard HSS (high-speed steel) knives and HM (carbide) knives. For HM knives, the correct grinding wheel is a diamond wheel — check that the supplied wheel is suitable for carbide or contact Krollit for the specific wheel.
What does "simultaneous sharpening of 2 310 mm knives" mean?
The HMS 600 has a knife holder system that allows two 310 mm knives to be mounted side-by-side and sharpened simultaneously in a single pass. This halves the sharpening time compared to doing them one by one, and is particularly useful when working on planers with paired knives (2 identical knives on the same shaft) that must have exactly the same profile to balance the shaft.
How often should HSS knives be sharpened in professional use?
In professional use (4–6 hours/day) on medium woods, sharpening is necessary every 2–4 weeks. On hardwoods, every 1–2 weeks. With the HMS 600, sharpening is done internally in 15–25 minutes instead of sending the knives out with 2–3 days of machine downtime.
Are replacement grinding wheels available?
Yes. Original Bernardo replacement grinding wheels for the HMS 600 are available with 3–5 business days shipping.
Is the HMS 600 compatible with the knives of Bernardo AD and ADM planers?
Yes. The HMS 600 is designed to sharpen standard HSS knives for Bernardo planers, including the AD, ADM, and FS series with 260, 310, and 410 mm knives. For planers with TCT spiral shafts (HM inserts), a sharpener is not necessary — the insert is rotated when worn.
