PROFILED LEATHER WHEEL FOR BERNARDO NTS SHARPENER
The Bernardo profiled leather wheel is the final tool in the blade processing chain. After using the disc (K 220 corundum) and scraping (leather scraping disc), the leather wheel gives the blade the sharp cut and polished edge that characterizes a professional scissor. It is not an option; it is the completion of the sharpening cycle.
Extended compatibility (NTS 200, NTS 250 Pro, NTS 250 Pro Vario) makes this wheel particularly valuable: it covers three generations of Bernardo scissors, from the entry-level model (NTS 200) to the top of the range (NTS 250 Pro Vario). A workshop that owns multiple Bernardo scissors has a single wheel that works on all of them.
Technical characteristics and performance
The wheel is profiled, meaning its shape is not cylindrical but contains micro-grooves that follow the blade's profile. This allows for uniform contact along the entire width of the blade, without creating areas of excessive contact that would generate burns or local flattening. The leather is synthetic (not animal skin), with hardness and density calibrated for sharpening; it is not the same leather as the scraping discs.
Recommended rotation speed: 180-250 rpm depending on the scissor model and blade (mild steel vs. stainless steel). Do not use above 280 rpm; the leather tends to disintegrate due to centrifugal force. Krollit recommends 180-200 rpm for slow and controlled sharpening, 220-250 rpm for more aggressive sharpening on very dull blades.
Maintenance and service life in production cycle
A leather wheel typically lasts 6-12 months of regular use (2-3 scissors in a production line, weekly sharpening). With sporadic use (1-2 sharpenings per month), it lasts 18-24 months. When the leather becomes shiny and flat (loses its sharpening ability), replace it. Monthly cleaning with a soft brush maintains performance; do not use water or solvents (they damage the leather).

Related accessories
Bernardo/Krollit distributes the complete sharpening cycle:
-
K 220 corundum abrasive disc — Initial removal, blade preparation (separate order)
-
Leather scraping disc — Intermediate finishing, gentle scraping (separate order)
-
Leather wheel — Final sharpening and polishing (THIS PRODUCT)
We recommend using all three in sequence for optimal sharpening. A new Bernardo blade requires a complete cycle every 6-12 months of regular use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a leather wheel and a leather scraping disc for sharpening?
Different function. The scraping disc gently scrapes and smooths out blade irregularities without removing visible material. The leather wheel actively sharpens: it removes micro-layers of metal from the blade, recreates the cutting edge, and adds shine. You use the scraping disc for routine maintenance (every 2-4 weeks); you use the leather wheel for deep sharpening (every 4-12 weeks depending on cutting volume).
Can I use the leather wheel on all Bernardo scissors?
No, only NTS 200, NTS 250 Pro, NTS 250 Pro Vario. It does not fit NTS 100, NTS 150, Record Power, Laguna, or other brands' scissors. Check the scissor's serial number. If in doubt, contact Krollit to confirm compatibility.
How long does a leather wheel last in continuous sharpening?
6-12 months of regular use (weekly sharpening on 2-3 scissors). With sporadic use (1-2 sharpenings/month), it lasts 18-24 months. Determining factor: total tonnage cut (mild steel sharpens faster than stainless steel). When the leather becomes completely shiny and flat (loses its sharpening ability), it's time to replace it.
At what speed should I use the leather wheel?
180-200 rpm for controlled sharpening (recommended). 220-250 rpm for more aggressive sharpening on very dull blades. Do not exceed 250 rpm; the leather tends to disintegrate. Bernardo NTS scissors have adjustable speed; set it according to your work cycle. Consult the scissor manual for the maximum recommended RPM.
Does the leather wheel require special maintenance?
Minimal. Monthly cleaning with a soft brush to remove dust and metallic deposits. Do not use water, solvents, or detergents (they damage the leather). If the wheel becomes shiny earlier than expected, it may mean you are working with very hard materials (stainless steel, aluminum) or that the speed is too high; reduce RPM and continue.
Can I resharpen/regenerate a leather wheel instead of replacing it?
Theoretically yes, but not recommended. A worn wheel loses its profiled shape; regeneration would require grinding on special lathes (cost ~€40-60, almost as much as a new wheel). It is better to replace it. Krollit offers regeneration services through partners; contact us to evaluate a specific case.
What warranty covers the leather wheel?
Bernardo warranty: manufacturing defects for 24 months from the date of purchase. It does not cover normal wear and tear from work cycles, flattening of the profile due to excessive speed, or damage from drops. If the wheel arrived defective, Bernardo will replace it. Contact Krollit to handle claims.
