Who uses the HSG 8 and for what

The Bernardo HSG 8 is a versatile lever shear: in addition to cutting sheet metal up to 5 mm, it also cuts round bars Ø 13 mm and flat bars 70 × 5 mm — a feature that differentiates it from sheet metal-only shears. Weighing 18 kg and requiring no electrical power, it can be used in workshops, on construction sites, or on a workbench. It is the tool for blacksmiths and metal fabricators who cut thick sheet metal and small section bars without wanting to use an angle grinder or cut-off saw.

Frequently asked questions

Does the HSG 8 also cut stainless steel?

For AISI 304 stainless steel (600 N/mm²), the capacity is reduced: sheet metal up to approximately 3–3.5 mm, round bars up to Ø 9–10 mm. The force required is greater than for mild steel.

How is it fixed to the workbench?

The HSG 8 is fixed to a bench or vise via its base. Stable fixing is important for safety when cutting materials close to the maximum capacity.

Are the blades replaceable?

Yes. Original Bernardo replacement blades for the HSG 8 are available with 3–5 working days shipping.

What is the difference between the HSG 8 and the PTS sheet metal-only shears?

The HSG 8 is versatile: it cuts sheet metal (5 mm), round bars (Ø 13 mm), and flat bars (70×5 mm) over a length of 160 mm. The PTS 650 S and PTS 1050 S cut only thin sheet metal (1.0–1.25 mm) but over much greater lengths (650 and 1,050 mm). The choice depends on the priority: thickness and versatility (HSG 8) vs cutting length on thin sheet metal (PTS).

Is specific training required to use it?

No. The HSG 8 is an intuitive manual lever tool. Standard safety rules for cutting tools apply: cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, keeping clear of the cut material's trajectory.
