A steady rest is a support that clamps onto the lathe bed and holds long or heavy workpieces during machining, preventing deflection and vibrations. It is essential when the workpiece's length-to-diameter ratio exceeds 4:1 (for a fixed steady rest) or 10:1 (for a traveling steady rest that moves with the tool). Without a steady rest, long workpieces will deflect under cutting force, leading to taper, vibrations, and non-cylindrical surfaces.

A fixed steady rest clamps onto the lathe bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point. A traveling steady rest (or follower rest) clamps onto the longitudinal carriage and moves with the tool – it always supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the tool, eliminating deflection during feeding. A traveling steady rest is necessary for turning very long workpieces where a fixed steady rest is not sufficient.

The steady rest must be centered with respect to the lathe's axis: mount the workpiece between centers, rest the steady rest jaws on a ground diameter or an already turned area (not on the rough stock), and adjust the jaws until they make light contact. Lubricate the jaws with cutting oil or grease to reduce wear. Do not tighten the jaws forcefully – they should support the workpiece without clamping it.
