Description

Original Bernardo traveling steady rest for Hobby 300 VD — supported diameter range: see manual mm. Accessory for stabilizing long workpieces during turning. Made in Austria, distributed in Italy by Krollit — official Bernardo distributor since 2007.

  • Type: Traveling steady rest
  • Workpiece diameter range: range see manual mm
  • Compatible with: Hobby 300 VD

What it's for

The traveling steady rest is fixed to the longitudinal carriage and moves with the tool. It supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the tool, eliminating deflection when turning very long workpieces. It is necessary for workpieces with a length/diameter ratio greater than 10:1.

Frequently asked questions

What is a steady rest and when is it indispensable?

A steady rest is a support that is fixed to the lathe bed and supports long or heavy workpieces during machining, preventing deflection and vibrations. It is indispensable when the length/diameter ratio of the workpiece exceeds 4:1 (for a fixed steady rest) or 10:1 (for a traveling steady rest that moves with the tool). Without a steady rest, long workpieces deflect under cutting force, producing taper, vibrations, and non-cylindrical surfaces.

What is the difference between a fixed steady rest and a traveling (rotary) steady rest?

A fixed steady rest is locked to the bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point. A traveling steady rest (or follower rest) is fixed to the longitudinal carriage and moves with the tool — it supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the tool, eliminating deflection during feeding. A traveling steady rest is necessary for turning very long workpieces where a fixed steady rest is not sufficient.

Is this steady rest compatible with my Bernardo lathe?

Each Bernardo steady rest is designed for the models indicated in the title. The workpiece diameter range (e.g., 50–590 mm) indicates the supported workpieces. Verify that your lathe model matches the one indicated. Customer service in Italian available.

How do you adjust a steady rest correctly?

The steady rest must be centered with respect to the lathe axis: mount the workpiece between centers, place the steady rest jaws on the ground diameter or on an already turned area (not on the rough material) and adjust the jaws until light contact. Lubricate the jaws with cutting oil or grease to reduce wear. Do not tighten the jaws forcefully — they must support the workpiece without clamping it.
