HSS vs. Bi-metal saw blade — which to choose for the VBS 310?
HSS (High Speed Steel) blades are made entirely of high-speed steel — economical, suitable for wood and light mild steels. Bi-metal blades have M42 (cobalt high-speed steel) teeth brazed onto a more flexible spring steel backing — more expensive but with 3–5 times longer lifespan on steel, stainless steel, and hard materials. For mixed wood/metal use, bi-metal is often more cost-effective in the long run.
Is 14 TPI pitch suitable for steel or wood?
14 teeth per inch is a fine pitch: suitable for stainless steel, thin-walled tubes, aluminum, and hardwoods. On thick solid wood, it tends to produce slow feed — for wood, prefer blades with 6–10 TPI. The rule: the workpiece section must always have at least 3 teeth in contact with the material during cutting — with 14 TPI on thin steel (2–5 mm), this requirement is met.
