CBN grinding wheels cut "cold" without rounding on HSS, maintaining the abrasive edge for a long time. Diamond grinding wheels should not be used on steel: the grains quickly round off, losing cutting ability.
What materials can it work on?
Depends on the geometry and material of the tool: HSS for common steels, HM/carbide for hard steels, CBN for HSS and case-hardened steels, diamond for hard metal.
HM cobalt inserts (HSSE) work up to HRC 65. CBN grinding wheels cut steels HRC 55-70 maintaining concentricity over time. For cast iron, consider green silicon carbide grinding wheels.
