Who uses the GSE 8701 RS and what for

The GSE 8701 RS meets the needs of construction companies working on sites without a mains connection, where a concrete mixer, site circular saw and lighting may be required at the same time. The 16 A CEE 400 V socket powers the most common three-phase loads in construction, while the two 230 V Schuko sockets remain available for portable tools. In agriculture, it is used on livestock and wine-growing farms to power pumps, mills and milking systems during power outages: the 25 l tank with 6 h of runtime covers the average duration of a rural blackout without intermediate refuelling. Mechanical workshops keep it as an emergency generator to keep a compressor and lighting system running.

Its position in the Güde range

In the petrol RS series with three-phase output, the GSE 8701 RS sits at the top of the range. Below it, the GSE 6701 RS delivers 2,200 W at 230 V and 5,500 W at 400 V with a 420 cm³ engine, while the GSE 4701 RS and GSE 3701 RS remain single-phase models, respectively delivering 3,600 W and 2,800 W through 230 V sockets only. Those looking for the same power class with a diesel engine and lower fuel consumption during long operating sessions can consider the GSE 5501 DSG. The main step up from the 6701 to the 8701 is the available single-phase output, which increases from 2,200 to 3,500 W.

Who the GSE 8701 RS is for

Profile Suitability Reason
Construction company on sites without mains connection Suitable 7,800 W rated output from the CEE 400 V 16 A socket, sufficient for a concrete mixer and site saw operating in parallel
Farm with three-phase loads Suitable 25 l tank and stated 6 h runtime with fuel consumption of 4.2 l/h
Mechanical workshop, emergency generator Suitable Continuous output of 7,500 W at 400 V and 3,200 W at 230 V, with overload protection and voltmeter
Powering sensitive electronics Not suitable The synchronous alternator with AVR does not produce a pure sine wave: the manufacturer excludes laptops, smartphones and audio systems
Continuous 24-hour operation Not suitable Air-cooled petrol engine with 6 h runtime per tank, designed for intermittent use

Not suitable for: powering electronic control equipment, PCs, charging inverters or laboratory instrumentation, for which a pure-sine-wave inverter generator is required. Not suitable for use as a permanent primary power source replacing a mains connection, and not suitable for operation in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas because of the exhaust emissions from the combustion engine.

Synchronous alternator and AVR regulation

The GSE 8701 RS is equipped with a synchronous alternator with copper windings and an AVR automatic voltage regulator, which corrects output-voltage fluctuations as the load changes. This architecture keeps the power supply to electric motors, pumps and variable-load tools stable, but produces a waveform different from that of an inverter generator. The manufacturer therefore excludes the connection of loads with sensitive electronics. Low-oil protection is triggered automatically when the oil level in the crankcase drops, stopping the engine before damage occurs, while overload protection interrupts the output above the rated threshold. The IP 23M protection rating allows outdoor use in light-rain conditions.

Professional applications

Construction site without mains connection

With 7,500 W of continuous output from the CEE 400 V socket, the GSE 8701 RS powers three-phase concrete mixers, site circular saws and masonry saws. The two 230 V Schuko sockets remain available for demolition hammers, work lights and portable tools within the overall continuous limit of 3,200 W. The trolley with large-diameter wheels allows the generator to be moved over uneven ground without lifting equipment.

Emergency generator for workshops and farms

In the event of a power outage, the generator keeps compressors, pumps and ventilation systems running. The 25 l tank, with fuel consumption of 4.2 l/h, provides 6 h of continuous operation before refuelling. AVR regulation stabilises the voltage during electric-motor starting surges, while low-oil protection stops the engine if it is operating without direct supervision and the oil level drops.

Mobile power for road and forestry maintenance

For work far from connection points, the unit powers drainage pumps, light welding units and cutting equipment. The IP 23M protection rating permits outdoor operation in light-rain conditions, while the stated 97 dB sound power level should be taken into account when planning work in inhabited areas.

Frequently asked questions

How much actual power does the GSE 8701 RS deliver from the 230 V sockets?

The two Schuko sockets deliver a total rated output of 3,500 W and 3,200 W continuous, with an output current of 14 A. This figure is the sum of the loads connected to the two sockets, not the power available from each socket individually.

The stated maximum output of 7,800 W is available only from the CEE 400 V three-phase socket. Anyone using only single-phase tools should therefore size the purchase on the basis of the 3,200 W continuous output, not the total nameplate figure. The panel-mounted voltmeter allows voltage stability to be checked during operation.

What is the difference between the engine's 9.3 kW and the stated 7.8 kW electrical output?

The 9.3 kW (13 HP) figure is the mechanical power of the 457 cm³ petrol engine. The 7,800 W figure is the rated electrical output delivered by the alternator, reduced by conversion losses and the power factor.

The value to use when sizing the installation is always the electrical output, in particular the continuous output of 7,500 W at 400 V and 3,200 W at 230 V. Rated output can be drawn for short intervals, typically during the starting surges of connected motors.

Why can laptops, smartphones or audio systems not be connected?

The manufacturer expressly excludes the connection of electronically sensitive loads. The synchronous alternator with AVR regulation stabilises the RMS voltage value, but does not produce the pure sine waveform required by switching power supplies.

To power PCs, laboratory instruments or equipment with electronic controls, an inverter generator or an interposed uninterruptible power supply is required. The GSE 8701 RS is intended for resistive and inductive loads, such as tools, pumps, electric motors and construction-site lighting.

Is the battery for electric starting included in the scope of delivery?

No. The machine is supplied without a battery. Electric key starting requires a 12 V battery, available as an original Güde accessory under code 40635-02001, model MP 18-2, 12 V 18 Ah.

Without a battery, the generator can still be started with the recoil starter fitted as standard to every unit. For users expecting frequent starts or installation in a technical room, key starting offers an operational advantage that can justify purchasing the accessory.

How much fuel does it consume and how long does one tank last?

The stated fuel consumption is 4.2 l/h and the tank capacity is 25 l, for a stated runtime of 6 h. Actual runtime varies according to the applied load: at reduced load, runtime increases significantly.

On worksites with eight-hour shifts, it is advisable to plan an intermediate refuelling stop. The engine uses unleaded petrol and requires 1.2 l of oil in 15W40 or 10W30 grades, which should be checked with the dipstick before every start.

Can the generator power a 400 V three-phase motor in a workshop?

Yes, within the 7,500 W continuous output available from the 5-pin 16 A CEE 400 V socket. It should be considered that asynchronous motors draw a higher current during starting than their rated current, generally three to six times as much.

A motor with a rated power of around 3 kW therefore falls within the GSE 8701 RS operating range with sufficient margin for the starting surge. For machines that start under load or use a power inverter, a preliminary check is advisable: Krollit technical service at +39 0825-1494022 can assess the specific case.

Can it be used as an emergency generator connected to the electrical distribution board?

Connection to a fixed electrical installation requires a mains transfer switch and a device that isolates the installation from the public grid, installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the applicable CEI regulations.

Directly connecting the generator sockets to a domestic or commercial electrical installation is prohibited and creates risks for distribution-network personnel. The recommended configuration uses a dedicated panel for priority circuits, sized for the 3,200 W single-phase or 7,500 W three-phase continuous output.

What maintenance does the 457 cm³ engine require?

Routine maintenance includes checking the oil level before every start, periodically replacing the engine oil, air filter and spark plug, and cleaning the cooling grille. Oil capacity is 1.2 l in 15W40 or 10W30 grades.

The exact service intervals in operating hours are specified in the user manual supplied with the machine. During prolonged periods of inactivity, it is advisable to empty the tank or use a fuel stabiliser, as petrol tends to deteriorate in a 25 l tank. Original Güde spare parts are available from Krollit stock.

Can it be used outdoors in the rain?

The stated protection rating is IP 23M, covering protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm and against water spray up to 60 degrees from the vertical. Use in light rain therefore falls within the stated conditions.

Exposure to direct water jets and even partial immersion remain excluded. Operation in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas is not permitted under any circumstances because of carbon-monoxide emissions from the internal-combustion engine.
