Frequently asked questions

The bowl gouge — for what specific woodworking lathe operations?

The bowl gouge has a deep parabolic or U-shaped profile — designed to evacuate chips in face turning (endgrain and sidecut) on bowls, cups and objects with a concave internal profile. Unlike the standard lathe gouge (with a less deep V-section), the bowl gouge allows working in a confined space inside the piece without the wing getting caught on the wall. Made of HSS steel hardened up to 64 HRc for superior durability compared to normal tool steels.

How do you sharpen a bowl gouge?

The bowl gouge is sharpened with a swept-back grind or a convex profile on the flank — it produces a cutting edge that works both at the tip and on the side. A white corundum grinding wheel mounted on a bench grinder is used, or a jig for gouges (angular guide device) that maintains a constant angle while rotating the gouge against the grinding wheel. The typical sharpening angle is 45°–65° in the center.
