HSS shank end mills are for milling mild steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and plastic on vertical milling machines and machining centers. On wood, they produce acceptable results, but specific wood end mills (different spiral geometry) give a superior finish. For aluminum: high speed, moderate feed. For steel: reduce speed by 30–40% compared to aluminum.
No coating (bare HSS) — what changes in practice?
Uncoated HSS end mills have a lower cost and are perfectly fine for occasional use on soft materials (aluminum, brass, wood). On steel, they wear out more quickly than coated ones.
