Set of 10 end mills from 3 to 10 mm — when to use them on metal vs. wood?
HSS end mills with TiN coating are for milling mild steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and plastic on vertical milling machines and machining centers. On wood, they produce acceptable results, but wood-specific end mills (different spiral geometry) provide a superior finish. For aluminum: high speed, moderate feed. For steel: reduce speed by 30–40% compared to aluminum.
TiN (tin) coating — what changes in practice?
The TiN coating reduces friction by 30–40% and increases surface hardness — the end mill resists heat better and lasts 2–3 times longer than uncoated HSS, especially on steel. On wood and plastic, the difference is less noticeable.
