Frequently asked questions

18-piece corrugated parallel supports — what are they used for in the workshop?

Corrugated parallel supports (parallel blocks) are pairs of hardened and ground steel blocks with parallel flat surfaces to ±0.005 mm. They are used to: raise workpieces on the milling machine vise to the correct height, ensure the workpiece is positioned perpendicular to the tool, and check the flatness of surfaces. The corrugated surface of the corrugated supports prevents the workpiece from slipping during machining — the corrugation increases friction with the workpiece.

How are they used correctly on the vise?

Position the parallel supports under the workpiece in the vise before tightening. After tightening, lightly tap the workpiece downwards with a plastic hammer — if the supports are free (slide), the position is correct; if they are rigidly blocked under load, there is an irregularity in the workpiece that needs to be corrected. Never proceed with milling if the supports appear to be under asymmetric tension.
