How often should planer knives be replaced?
In professional use (4–6 hours/day) on medium woods: every 2–4 weeks. On hardwoods (oak, ash, teak): every 1–2 weeks. Signs of wear: planed surface with burn marks, wavy boards, increased force required for feeding. A sharp HSS knife is safer than a worn one — a worn blade requires more force and can tear fibers instead of cutting them.
Are these knives compatible with my Bernardo planer?
Each set of knives is specific to the model indicated in the title. The dimensions (length × width × thickness) must match exactly — even a 0.5 mm difference in diameter can prevent proper clamping on the shaft. Please verify the model before purchasing. Customer support available in Italian.
Can HSS knives be sharpened instead of replaced?
Yes — with the Bernardo planer knife sharpener (HMS 600 or PHMS 630 A) it is possible to sharpen HSS knives instead of replacing them. An HSS knife can be sharpened 5–10 times before the thickness becomes insufficient for secure clamping on the shaft. For TCT carbide knives (inserts), the insert is rotated without sharpening.
