Titanium nitride TiN coating — what does it add compared to uncoated HSS end mills?
The TiN coating (light gold) reduces the coefficient of friction by 30–40% and increases the surface hardness from 64 HRC (HSS) to approximately 78 HRC — result: 2–4× longer life than uncoated end mills, especially on mild steel and aluminum. The maximum operating temperature of TiN is approximately 600°C — for high-speed machining on stainless steel, prefer TiAlN (purple-gray) which withstands up to 900°C.
