Who uses the BDS 75 and for what

The Bernardo BDS 75 is a combined belt sander (abrasive belt + abrasive disc) for mechanical workshops and blacksmiths. Construction feature: the 75 × 1,180 mm abrasive belt handles sanding of flat surfaces, contours, profiles, and weld seams; the Ø 150 mm abrasive disc with hook-and-loop fastening allows quick grit changes for different finishes. The tilting tables (0-90° for the belt, 0-45° for the disc) allow the workpiece to be positioned at the optimal angle for each process. A single fixed speed of 11 m/s is suitable for standard use on mild steels and typical workshop materials. The graphite coating on the front surface of the belt reduces friction and extends the life of the abrasive belt. Integrated Ø 50 mm dust extraction for connection to an existing central system. In Krollit customer workshops, the BDS 75 is chosen by mechanical workshops for finishing metal parts, blacksmiths for deburring welded parts, advanced metal hobbyists for mixed operations, and vocational school training workshops.

Its place in the range

The Bernardo belt sander range is organized into 4 models by application: BDS 75 (combined belt 75 + disc 150, 1 speed) and BDS 75-2 (same configuration, 2 speeds) for general workshops with mixed operations; BS 100 × 1220 S-2 (belt only 100 × 1,220, 2 speeds, base) for metal fabrication with long welds to be finished; KBR 100 × 2000 Duo (belt 100 × 2,000 + device for pipes Ø 20-76 mm) for workshops specializing in tubular fabrication. The BDS family is the base of the range: combined belt + disc configuration for general-purpose use. Difference between BDS 75 (1 speed) and BDS 75-2 (2 speeds): the BDS 75 costs less, is dimensioned for standard use on mild steels; the BDS 75-2 is dimensioned for workshops with a variety of materials (mild steels, stainless steel, aluminum) that require different speeds. For workshops specializing in long welds, the BS 100 × 1220 S-2 is correctly dimensioned; for workshops specializing in pipes and profiles, the KBR 100 × 2000 Duo is the correct choice.

Who is the BDS 75 for

Profile Compatibility Reason
Advanced metal hobbyist Suitable Combined belt + disc configuration for versatile use in a home workshop. 400V three-phase voltage requires an industrial meter or adapters.
General mechanical workshop Recommended Suitable for deburring, finishing, sanding on mild steels and standard workshop materials. Single fixed speed for standard use.
Blacksmith / light fabrication Recommended Tilting tables (0-90° for belt, 0-45° for disc) for optimal workpiece positioning. Ø 50 mm dust extraction for connection to a central system.

Not recommended for: workshops with a variety of materials requiring different speeds (the BDS 75-2 with dual speed is correctly dimensioned); deburring long welds over 800 mm (the BS 100 × 1220 S-2 with a long belt is the correct choice); processing pipes and profiles (the KBR 100 × 2000 Duo with a dedicated device is the specialized choice); single-phase 230V power supply (all Bernardo sanders require industrial 400V three-phase); use in dusty environments without connected extraction (metallic abrasive dusts are hazardous to operator health).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 400V three-phase and not 230V single-phase?

The 1.1-3.3 kW sander motor (depending on the model) requires power that the domestic 230V single-phase line cannot provide stably. Industrial 400V three-phase is mandatory for professional use.

For workshops without a 400V industrial three-phase line, it is necessary to request a connection from the electricity provider (typical cost €500-€2,000) or use a single-phase to three-phase converter (cost €200-€800, only suitable for occasional use due to limited duration). For workshops with continuous planned use, a dedicated industrial three-phase meter is recommended. Krollit does not sell sanders with single-phase motors: the required power does not allow it.

How to choose the abrasive belt grit?

Low grits (40-60) for aggressive roughing (fast material removal, deburring of raw parts); medium grits (80-120) for standard workshop finishing; high grits (180-400) for fine pre-polishing finishing. Changing grit requires replacing the abrasive belt or disc.

Abrasive belts are consumables: typical lifespan 2-10 actual working hours depending on grit and material. For professional use, it is recommended to keep a stock of belts of various grits. Original Bernardo abrasive belts (grits 36, 60, 80, 120, 180, 240) available from stock with 3-5 business day shipping.

What is the graphite coating for?

The graphite coating on the front surface of the belt (the area where the workpiece contacts the belt) significantly reduces friction between the belt and the support, lowering the working temperature and extending the life of the abrasive belt (typically +30-50% compared to belts without coating).

The graphite coating is a construction feature on professional Bernardo sanders: it also reduces noise and heat generation on the workpiece, a crucial feature for stainless steel processing where excessive heat causes difficult-to-remove overheating stains. For intensive professional use, the coating is a consumable component: replaceable by an authorized Bernardo service center.

Is the machine safe for use by non-specialized personnel?

The sander is an industrial machine that requires basic training on safe use: adherence to safeguards, use of PPE (safety glasses, gloves, dust masks), emergency procedures. The machine has standard safeguards (belt guard, workpiece support, safety switch) but use by untrained personnel carries a risk of serious injury.

For professional environments, staff training is mandatory according to occupational safety regulations (Legislative Decree 81/2008). For vocational schools and training workshops, the presence of an experienced operator during student use is recommended. The machine is CE marked in compliance with Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

How much noise does it generate during operation?

The typical sound level of belt sanders is 80-90 dB during operation under load. For prolonged use in enclosed spaces, the use of noise-canceling headphones is mandatory (PPE compliant with EN 352).

The sound level varies based on: belt speed (high speeds generate more noise), workpiece material (steel makes more noise than wood), condition of the abrasive belt (worn belts vibrate and make more noise). For shared environments, it is recommended to position the machine in a dedicated room or with acoustic barriers. For professional workshops, noise risk assessment according to Legislative Decree 81/2008 is mandatory.
