Description

Original Bernardo fixed steady rest for Hobby 300 VD — supported diameter range, see manual in mm. Accessory for stabilizing long workpieces during turning. Produced in Austria by Bernardo; Krollit has been the official distributor in Italy since 2007.

  • Type: Fixed steady rest
  • Workpiece diameter range: range see manual mm
  • Compatible with: Hobby 300 VD

Purpose

The fixed steady rest clamps onto the lathe bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point, preventing it from deflecting under cutting force. It is essential for workpieces with a length/diameter ratio greater than 4:1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a steady rest and when is it essential?

A steady rest is a support that clamps onto the lathe bed and holds long or heavy workpieces during machining, preventing deflection and vibrations. It is essential when the workpiece's length-to-diameter ratio exceeds 4:1 (for a fixed steady rest) or 10:1 (for a traveling steady rest that moves with the tool). Without a steady rest, long workpieces will deflect under cutting force, leading to taper, vibrations, and non-cylindrical surfaces.

What is the difference between a fixed steady rest and a traveling (revolving) steady rest?

A fixed steady rest clamps onto the lathe bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point. A traveling steady rest (or follower rest) clamps onto the longitudinal carriage and moves with the tool – it always supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the tool, eliminating deflection during feeding. A traveling steady rest is necessary for turning very long workpieces where a fixed steady rest is not sufficient.

Is this steady rest compatible with my Bernardo lathe?

Each Bernardo steady rest is designed for the models indicated in the title. The workpiece diameter range (e.g., 50–590 mm) indicates the workpieces that can be supported. Verify that your lathe model matches the one indicated. Customer support is available in Italian.

How do you adjust a steady rest correctly?

The steady rest must be centered with respect to the lathe's axis: mount the workpiece between centers, rest the steady rest jaws on a ground diameter or an already turned area (not on the rough stock), and adjust the jaws until they make light contact. Lubricate the jaws with cutting oil or grease to reduce wear. Do not tighten the jaws forcefully – they should support the workpiece without clamping it.
