Description

Original Bernardo fixed steady rest for Titan 660 / Titan 660 Vario — supportable diameter range 190–380 mm. Accessory for stabilizing long workpieces during turning. Austrian made by Bernardo. Krollit has been an official distributor in Italy since 2007.

  • Type: Fixed steady rest
  • Workpiece diameter range: 190–380 mm
  • Compatible with: Titan 660 / Titan 660 Vario

What it is for

The fixed steady rest is clamped onto the lathe bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point, preventing it from flexing under cutting forces. It is essential for workpieces with a length-to-diameter ratio greater than 4:1.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a steady rest and when is it indispensable?

A steady rest is a support that is fixed to the lathe bed and supports long or heavy workpieces during machining, preventing flexing and vibrations. It is indispensable when the length-to-diameter ratio of the workpiece exceeds 4:1 (for a fixed steady rest) or 10:1 (for a traveling steady rest that accompanies the tool). Without a steady rest, long workpieces flex under cutting forces, resulting in tapering, vibrations, and non-cylindrical surfaces.

What is the difference between a fixed steady rest and a traveling (rotating) steady rest?

A fixed steady rest is clamped onto the lathe bed in a fixed position and supports the workpiece at a specific point. A traveling steady rest (or follower rest) is clamped onto the saddle and accompanies the tool during movement — it always supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the tool, eliminating flexing during feed. A traveling steady rest is necessary for turning very long workpieces where a fixed steady rest is not sufficient.

Is this steady rest compatible with my Bernardo lathe?

Each Bernardo steady rest is designed for the models indicated in the title. The workpiece diameter range (e.g., 50–590 mm) indicates the workpieces that can be supported. Verify that your lathe model matches the one indicated. Customer support is available in Italian.

How do you adjust a steady rest correctly?

The steady rest must be centered with respect to the lathe axis: mount the workpiece between centers, rest the steady rest jaws on the ground diameter or on an already turned area (not on the rough stock) and adjust the jaws until light contact is made. Lubricate the jaws with cutting oil or grease to reduce wear. Do not tighten the jaws forcefully — they should support the workpiece without clamping it.
