Frequently asked questions

Soft top jaws Ø 160 mm — how do they differ from one-piece soft jaws?

Soft top jaws combine the top jaw construction (hardened master jaw + replaceable soft top insert) with a non-hardened mild steel insert. Compared to one-piece soft jaws: the soft inserts are replaced separately when worn or when machined too much, without changing the master jaw. Compared to reversible hardened top jaws: soft inserts allow for in-situ machining for maximum concentricity on delicate parts.

For Ø 160 mm — when is it necessary to machine (bore) soft inserts in situ?

In-situ boring of soft inserts is necessary whenever: new inserts are mounted, the chuck clamping pressure is changed, or eccentricity is noted in the workpiece. For machining parts requiring concentricity better than 0.05 mm, in-situ boring is indispensable — it reduces runout to the physically achievable minimum with the chuck in use.

Can soft inserts be reversed for internal/external gripping?

It depends on the model: DSTJ jaws have non-reversible soft inserts (internal gripping only or external gripping only); STJ reversible top jaws can have soft inserts mounted in both orientations. Check the specifications of the specific model. Customer support in Italian available.
