The Bernardo adjustable grooving cutter Γ 160 mm is a tool for spindle moulders (standard Γ 30 mm spindle) designed for creating calibrated grooves on solid wood and panels. Unlike single-shank cutters, this tool has an adjustable grooving width from 4β7.5 mm β allowing the grooving width to be adapted without changing tools, reducing setup times. Used for creating tongue and groove joints, panel seats, mortises, and fastening profiles.
How is the groove width adjusted?
Adjustment is made via the lateral expansion system: the two halves of the tool move, bringing the lateral cutting blades closer or further apart. The adjustment is graduated β check the millimeter scale engraved on the tool. For precision grooves, always perform a test cut on scrap material and measure the actual width before proceeding with the final workpiece.
What materials does it work on?
Solid wood (hard and soft), chipboard, MDF, plywood. Not suitable for metals β the inserts are optimized for wood. On MDF and panels with melamine coating, reduce the feed rate to prevent fraying of the groove edge.
What spindle speed should be used?
For Γ 160 mm grooving cutters: 3,000β6,000 rpm on solid wood. On MDF: 4,000β8,000 rpm with reduced feed rate. The optimal peripheral speed is 40β60 m/s β do not exceed the maximum speed indicated on the tool.
