Signs of wear: planed surface with burn marks, wavy boards, increased force required for feeding. A well-sharpened HSS knife is safer than a worn one — a worn blade requires more force and can tear fibers instead of cutting them.

Are these knives compatible with my Bernardo planer?

Each knife set is specific to the model indicated in the title. The dimensions (length × width × thickness) must match exactly — even 0.5 mm difference in diameter can prevent proper clamping on the shaft. Verify the model before purchasing. Customer support in Italian available.

Can HSS knives be sharpened instead of replaced?

Yes — with the Bernardo planer knife sharpener (HMS 600 or PHMS 630 A), HSS knives can be sharpened instead of replaced. An HSS knife can be sharpened 5–10 times before the thickness becomes insufficient for secure clamping on the shaft. For TCT carbide knives (inserts), the insert is rotated without sharpening.
