M5–M12 Threaded Insert Repair Kit — when to use instead of re-tapping?
The threaded insert repair kit (Helicoil type or similar) is used when the thread in the material is worn or stripped and it is no longer possible to reassemble the original screw — re-tapping the original hole would require a larger diameter screw (not always available or compatible). It is performed by: 1) drilling the damaged hole to the preparation diameter, 2) tapping with the special tap included, 3) inserting the spiral insert, 4) removing the tang. The result is a thread of the original diameter (M5/M6/M8/M10/M12) on new material.
What materials does it work on?
On all materials: steel, aluminum, cast iron, plastic. Particularly useful on aluminum where the thread strips more easily than on steel. The kit includes the most common sizes M5, M6, M8, M10, M12 — covering the vast majority of repair cases in mechanical workshops and industrial maintenance.
