5C collet system — when is it used instead of the standard 3-jaw chuck?
5C collets clamp workpieces with cylindrical or hexagonal shanks with higher concentricity than jaw chucks (TIR typically <0.005 mm vs. <0.02–0.05 mm for a chuck). They are necessary when: concentricity is critical (precision production on shafts, gears), workpieces are small (Ø 3–26 mm) and the jaw cannot clamp effectively, working in series with identical pieces to be loaded quickly. Disadvantage: each diameter requires its specific collet (sold separately).
Does the 3-jaw body allow 5C collets to be used like a normal self-centering chuck?
Yes — the 3-jaw body with 5C collet holder combines the flexibility of the jaw chuck with 5C compatibility. For standard workpieces, jaws are used; for precision workpieces, the appropriate 5C collet is mounted in the body.
