What is a MT 5/5 extension sleeve for and when is it needed?
The MT 5/5 extension sleeve has an MT 5 external taper (inserted into the machine) and an MT 5 internal taper (holds the tool). It allows you to mount tools with an MT 5 Morse taper shank on machines with an MT 5 Morse taper spindle – the larger number is the machine taper, the smaller is the tool taper. The extension sleeve allows the smaller tool to fill the larger seat, maintaining DIN 2187 concentricity.
Difference between an extension sleeve and a reduction sleeve?
An extension sleeve holds a smaller taper (tool) in a larger spindle (machine): MT 5/5 → the machine has MT 5, the tool has MT 5. A reduction sleeve does the opposite – it holds a larger taper in a smaller spindle. They are not interchangeable. Always check which one you need before purchasing.
How do you remove the sleeve from the Morse taper spindle?
Using the knockout pin (drawbar) that runs through the spindle bore: insert the pin from the opposite side and tap with a hammer. Alternatively, use the flat drift key inserted into the spindle slot. Never force with improvised tools – the Morse taper is self-locking, and lateral force can damage the seat.
