Which variant to choose
The five Titebond Instant glues share the same cyanoacrylate base but differ in viscosity and set speed, making them suited to different jobs. Thin has the lowest viscosity and the fastest set, indicated for repairing hairline cracks, small wood defects and lifted veneer edges, where a fast flow into a narrow gap is needed. Medium has intermediate viscosity (120 cPs) and is indicated for gluing brass tubes in pen turning, filling knots and voids in wood, and assembling segments for turning. Medium Jet Black shares the same viscosity as Medium but dries glossy black, useful for accentuating details, creating inlays or working spalted wood. Thick has higher viscosity (2,400 cPs) and a longer set time, indicated for corner joints on frames, quick fixturing of templates, and gluing turning blanks. Instant Gel has the highest viscosity in the range (60,000 cPs) and the longest assembly time, designed to fill larger gaps and glue vertical surfaces or complex shapes where a runny glue would drip away.
Who the Titebond Instant range is for
| Profile | Fit | Reason |
| Pen and small-object turner | Suitable | Medium (120 cPs) is specifically indicated for gluing brass tubes and filling knots during turning |
| Restorer for quick crack and veneer repairs | Suitable | Thin has the shortest set time in the range (3 seconds with accelerator), useful for instant fixturing without clamping |
| Woodworker assembling frames and turning blanks | Suitable | Thick (2,400 cPs) is formulated for end-grain corner joints and template fixturing |
| Structural or load-bearing bonding | Not suitable | CA glues are suited to small surfaces and narrow gaps, not structural or load-bearing joints |
Not suitable for: structural or load-bearing bonding, direct or indirect contact with food (for these applications Titebond recommends II Premium or III Ultimate), and use without personal protective equipment given the fast set time and irritation risks listed in the safety warnings.
Comparison of the five variants
| Variant | Viscosity | Open time | Initial set (with accelerator) | Full cure | Dried colour | Recommended use |
| Instant Thin | not specified by manufacturer | 5 seconds | 15 seconds | 8 hours | Clear | Hairline cracks, lifted veneer |
| Instant Medium | 120 cPs | 7 seconds | 25 seconds | 8 hours | Clear | Pen turning, knots and voids in wood |
| Instant Medium Jet Black | 500 cPs | 30 seconds | 60 seconds | 24 hours | Glossy black | Inlays, decorative details, spalted wood |
| Instant Thick | 2,400 cPs | 10 seconds | 35 seconds | 8 hours | Clear | Corner joints, turning blanks, templates |
| Instant Gel | 60,000 cPs | 30 seconds | 60 seconds | 8 hours | Clear | Large gaps, vertical surfaces, complex shapes |
Safety and warnings
All variants are classified H315 (skin irritation), H319 (serious eye irritation) and H335 (may cause respiratory irritation). The Instant Thick variant additionally carries the classifications H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction), H341 (suspected of causing genetic defects) and H351 (suspected of causing cancer), not present in the other four variants. Use of protective gloves, a ventilated environment and reading the safety data sheet before use are recommended, particularly for the Thick variant.

Frequently asked questions
How does the buy-2-get-1-free offer on the Instant range work?
Buying two bottles of your choice among the five available variants (Thin, Medium, Medium Jet Black, Thick, Instant Gel), a third bottle is added free to the order, even in a different variant from the first two.
The offer can be combined across multiple sets of three: buying six bottles gets you two free, following the same mechanism.
What's the main difference between Thin, Medium and Thick?
The main difference is viscosity: Thin flows quickly and is indicated for narrow gaps, Medium has intermediate viscosity (120 cPs) for versatile applications, Thick (2,400 cPs) stays in place on vertical surfaces or corner joints.
Higher viscosity also means a slightly longer set time: Thin reaches initial set in 15 seconds with accelerator, Thick in 35 seconds.
Does Medium Jet Black behave differently from the others when working with it?
No, it shares the same viscosity (120 cPs) and similar set times to standard Medium. The difference is the colour: it dries glossy black instead of clear, useful for accentuating details or creating inlays.
It does have a longer full cure time (24 hours versus 8 hours for the other variants), so plan with margin if the piece requires immediate follow-up work.
Do I necessarily need the CA accelerator to use these glues?
No, all variants set even without accelerator, but the assembly and initial set times stated refer to use with accelerator, which reduces absorption into the material and speeds up the reaction.
Without accelerator, set times are longer, especially with Thick and Instant Gel given their thicker glue film.
Does Instant Thick carry different risks from the other variants?
Yes, it is the only one of the five variants also classified with the hazard statements H317, H341 and H351, relating to possible skin sensitisation and suspected genetic and carcinogenic effects.
For this variant, using protective gloves and a ventilated environment is particularly important, along with reading the safety data sheet before use.
Are these glues suitable for food contact?
No, none of the five Instant variants is indicated for products in food contact, not even indirect. For this use, Titebond recommends II Premium or III Ultimate.
The Instant glues remain suited to technical woodworking, turning, restoration and repair work on non-food materials.
