Frequently Asked Questions

Soft top jaws Ø 160 mm — how do they differ from soft monoblock jaws?

Soft top jaws combine the top jaw construction (hardened base body + replaceable soft top insert) with the soft unhardened steel insert. Compared to soft monoblock jaws: soft inserts are replaced separately when worn or overly machined, without changing the base body. Compared to reversible hardened top jaws: soft inserts allow for in-situ machining for maximum concentricity on delicate workpieces.

For Ø 160 mm — when is it necessary to bore (machine) the soft inserts in situ?

In-situ boring of soft inserts is necessary whenever: new inserts are mounted, the chuck clamping pressure is changed, or eccentricity is noted in the workpiece. For machining parts requiring concentricity better than 0.05 mm, in-situ boring is essential — it reduces runout to the physically achievable minimum with the chuck in use.

Can soft inserts be reversed for internal/external gripping?

It depends on the model: DSTJ jaws have non-reversible soft inserts (internal grip only or external grip only); reversible STJ top jaws can have soft inserts mounted in both orientations. Please check the specifications of the specific model. Customer service in Italian available.
