Are these tin-coated HM inserts for 12 and 16 mm boring bars?
The kit of 5 HM (hard metal) inserts with bronze TiN coating is specifically for Bernardo 12 mm (art. 44-2031) and 16 mm (art. 44-2032) boring bars. The inserts are mounted in the radial insert holder of the bar and secured with a clamping screw — the geometry of the insert produces the internal surface of the bored hole. TiN coating reduces friction and increases durability by 2–3× compared to uncoated inserts.
How do you know when to replace an insert?
Signs of a worn insert: progressively worsening surface finish of the hole, increased force required (the machine slows down), vibration during boring, frayed hole edges. Replace the insert before the collapsed cutting edge produces grooves in the boring bar — repairing the bar is more expensive than 5 inserts.
