Difference between fixed steady rest and traveling steady rest for Profi(center) 650 G?

The fixed steady rest locks into a fixed position on the lathe bed and supports the workpiece at a specific point using 3 adjustable jaws. The traveling steady rest (follower) attaches to the longitudinal carriage and moves with the cutting tool during turning — it always supports the workpiece at the same point relative to the cutting edge, eliminating deflection on very long workpieces. For the Proficenter 650 G, the traveling steady rest is necessary when turning shafts over 400 mm with an L/D ratio greater than 8:1.
